Caption
This anonymous artist mostly copied the compositions by Filippo Lippi or Pesellino. This is a copy after Pesellino's ‘Madonna and Child with angels’, now in the Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio. It was probably acquired by Adelbert Wellington Brownlow Cust, 3rd Earl, who as a Trustee of the National Gallery, attributed it to Filippo Lippi. The image of the rose garden was drawn from the ‘Song of Songs’ in the Old Testament, where the ‘hortus conclusus’, or ‘enclosed garden’ was made to stand for Mary’s virginity.
