Summary
Bowl, porcelain, round with an upwardly angled rim, Arita, Hizen Province, Japan, c. 1710, decorated in the Imari palette in underglaze blue and overglaze red and green enamels and gold with peonies in the centre, a band of alternating flowering plants around the sides, the rim with rosettes within lobed cartouches alternating with diaper pattern and butterflies, the exterior with flowers within roundels, inscribed on the base in underglaze blue with the auspicious phrase Fuki chōshun 冨貴長春, ‘wealth, honour and everlasting youth’.
