Summary
Oil painting on canvas, River Landscape, by John Hoppner, RA (London 1758 – London 1810). River landscape with a house on a cliff top to left, sheep grazing below. A figure walking along a river side track to right with tall trees beyond. Recorded in 'John Hoppner R.A. Mackay and Roberts,1909,p.302 as 'A charming hilly landscape.....of a brown tone....and with a touch resembling Wilson,in that master's golden and best period,.....
Provenance
The Reverend S.Martin, husband of Selina Beresford (was probably purchased by him from Hoppner himself). 'In the possession of Miss Martin,187 Gloucester Terrace,Hyde Park. W.; bequeathed by the Reverend Francis Martin,Vice Master of Trinity College,Cambridge (proved 9 June 1868) to Mr Marcus Martin, father of the present owner; bequeathed by Marcus Beresford Busfield Stapleton Martin (1911 - 1987)
