Caption
Henry Kelsall of Colkirk, Norfolk, was Senior Clerk at the Treasury from 1714 until his death. He was effectively second-in-command to John Scrope at the Treasury from the death of William Lowndes in 1724. After his retirement from the Commons, he was commissioner of the Land Tax from 1735 until his death. His portrait hangs amongst others of ‘Norfolk Worthies’ at Blickling.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Henry Kelsall MP (1692-1762) by William Aikman (Forfar 1682 – London 1731), 1729. A full-length portrait, standing. Full grey wig. Black coat and breeches, silver-grey brocade waistcoat, white short and cravat, Grey hose, black shoes with silver biuckles. White kid glove on left hand holding the other glove, resting hand on sword hilt. Letter in right hand resting on table covered in red velvet. Standing by pillar at right with landscape seen at top left. Senior Clerk at the Treasury when this was painted and subsequently a Commissioner of the Land Tax.
