Summary
Oil painting on canvas, John Hobart, 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire (1723-1793) by Francis Cotes RA (London 1726 – London 1770), circa 1766. A half-length portrait, half turned to his right, gazing to the left. Formal dress, red coat with gold embroidery on lapels, and gold buttons. Black cravat and undershirt, lace frill. Natural hair worn long, tied at back with black ribbon. Ref Number '242' in gilt at lower left of canvas, and '253' at lower right of frame. He remodelled Blickling in Jacobean style and built the Orangery. The signed original of this portrait, of 1766, is at Melbourne Hall, Derbyshire.
Provenance
Part of the Lothian collection at Newbattle. Given to the National Trust in 1990 by the 12th Marquis of Lothian to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the gift of Blickling Hall and Estate by his cousin Philip, 11th Marquis.
