Summary
Oil painting on canvas. Dorothy Bell, Lady Hobart (1572-1641), attributed to Master V.M. (fl. England c.1634-37), 1634. A three-quarter-length portrait of the widow of the builder of Blickling, facing, turned slightly to our right. Dressed as a widow, completely in black, with black mantle and veil coming up over her head to end in an attenuated widow's peak, over a lace-edged white coif, white cartwheel collar, white undershift with double cuffs. Holding a little prayerbook (?) fastened by clasps in her left hand, and with her right resting upon a table. The cloth on this, and the curtain occupying the whole space behind her, are plum-pink. Her eyes are bluish-grey, and her hair ginger-brown. inscribed in white top left 'Lady Hobart'.
