This was one Reynolds' most popular 'fancy pictures' in its day. It was probably inspired by pictures of the same subject by Giorgione. Haydon thought it was surpassed only by Reynolds' Charity (Petworth[NT]) - "it is the completest bit of a certain expression in the world - a thing I could dwell on for ages" - and persuaded George Phillips, MP, to buy it for 400 guineas at the posthumous sale of the artist's niece, the Marchioness of Thomond. It came to Antony through Cynthia Mary Burns, Lady Carew Pole (d.1977) whose father Walter Spencer Morgan Burns once owned it.
