Summary
Oil painting on canvas, John Fane, 9th Earl of Westmorland (1728–1774) by Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA (Plympton 1723 - London 1792). A full-length portrait leaning against a tree on the right, holding a three-point hat. In 1763 Joshua Reynolds painted his full length portrait entitled Lord Burghersh. Reynolds was paid 100 guineas for the work which depicted the subject wearing blue, embroidered with gold, in a landscape with the family seat since 1617, Apethorpe Hall, in the background. In May 1903 the portrait was sold to Martin Colnaghi for 1,250 guineas.

By descent to 12th Earl of Westmorland who sold it 4 July 1887 to Agnew's who sold it two days later to the Very Reverend T. W. Jex-Blake, Dean of Wells; Dean of Wells sale of The Vaile and other Pictures, 23-25 May 1903 (76) to Martin Colnaghi; Arthur James; by inheritance through Cynthia, Lady Carew Pole to Sir John Carew Pole Bt by 1951 whose her great-aunt was Mrs Arthur James of Coton Hall, Rugby; on loan from Trustees of Antony
