Summary
Oil painting on panel, Moses striking the Rock, Italian School, circa 1700. The biblical story of Moses drawing water from the rock is told in Exodus 17: 1-7 and Numbers 20: 20-13. The event took place during Moses’s journey in the desert from Egypt with the Israelites. When they reached Rephidim they had no water to drink, and began murmuring against Moses. After asking God for help, Moses stood upon the rock of Horeb in the presence of the elders and smote the rock with his rod, bringing forth water. The subject is seen as spiritual refreshment of man from the Church.
