Summary
Oil painting on canvas with an arched top, The Holy Family by John Graham Gilbert (Glasgow 1794 - Glasgow 1866), signed 'J. Gilbert Dec. 18...'. An interior scene with the Virgin Mary kneeling on the left clothed in a blue mantel with a red robe underneath and a white head covering, her hands held together in prayer, the Christ child swaddled in white lying in a crib filled with straw at the centre and Saint Joseph kneeling to the right, his hands held aloft in an expression of awe. He wears a purple robe with a brown cloak. A light-filled opening framed with clouds hangs above the group. There is a multi-paned window in the wall at the far left through which the moon and clouds can be seen.
