Loosely inserted: 1. typescript note from the Royal Horticultural Society to the Observer requesting review; dated: 16th August, 1956. 2. Autograph letter signed from Fred Stern to "Lady Nicolson" thanking her for review; headed: Highdown, Goring-by-Sea, Worthing, Sussex; dated: Nov.17.56. Provenance: pastedown inscribed "V.S-W. / Sissinghurst Aug. 1956" [i.e. Vita Sackville-West, 1892-1962]. Binding: blue publisher's cloth, gold lettered. (Water damage.)
