Summary
Sticcado-Pastrole, Crossley, Manchester, early 19th century. On a label glued to the inside bottom of the case): Crofsley, MAKER. / 93, Market Stt, Manchester. The outside of the case is lacquered black, the lid decorated with chinoiserie, edged by a gold band with fleurs-de-lys at the corners. The design of the two brass-gilt lid-hooks incorporates a female head. The inside of the case is painted a pale blue. It is divided into four compartments and crossed by two pairs of blue ribbons, secured to brass studs mounted outside the ends of the case. The spots of colophony(?) on the ribbons indicate the position of the thin glass plaques which are at present stored in the bottom of the case. Each plaque is marked in gold with its note name. 22 plaques survive (and another broken) indicating a compass of two octaves (25 plaques) from c to c (probably c1 to c3). Stored in the case is a plain wooden beater, 182mm long.
