Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Figures in a Candlit Interior, manner of Francesco Bassano the younger (Bassano del Grappa 1549 – Venice 1592). 16th century. Two fiqures in candlelight scene. Male fiqure turned towards candle wearing a red hat and coat and white drape whilst climbing into a bed with a curtain. A female figure has her back toward the viewer, wearing red dress and white drapery, holding up a plate of food.
Provenance
Acquired with Calke Abbey's contents, with the aid of a grant provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government and transferred in lieu of tax on the estate of Charles Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1917 - 1981) to the National Trust with the house that was given by Henry Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1921- 1991), in 1984
