Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Elizabeth Crewe, Countess of Arran (1679-1756) by John Closterman (Osnabrück 1660 – London 1711). A three-quarter-length portrait, seated, wearing a white dress with blue edging on the collar and sleeve. She holds a fan betweeen both hands, resting her right elbow on a shelf. Back left is a red drape and to the right a landscape. Sister of Catherine, wife of Sir John Harpur, 4th Bt.
Provenance
Acquired with Calke Abbey's contents, with the aid of a grant provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government and transferred in lieu of tax on the estate of Charles Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1917 - 1981) to the National Trust with the house that was given by Henry Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1921- 1991), in 1984
