Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Betrayal of Christ, after Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641). A group of figures, on the left, including a soldier in armour lunge towards a standing figure. One carries a burning lamp, lit against a dark ground. A figure swoons in the foreground. The figure of Christ on the right, facing, his head slightly inclined to Judas, left, who is about to kiss his cheek.The figure of Malchus lies on the floor in the foreground on the left, above him is Peter bending over him about to strike off his ear. A copy of a sketch for a picture bought from Rubens' estate by Philip IV of Spain and now in in the Museo del Prado. Another copy is at Kingston Lacy, NT1257077.
Provenance
Acquired with Calke Abbey's contents, with the aid of a grant provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government and transferred in lieu of tax on the estate of Charles Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1917 - 1981) to the National Trust with the house that was given by Henry Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1921- 1991), in 1984
