Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Cavalry Skirmish by Palamedes Palamedesz. I (London1607 – Delft 1638), signed with initials. A battle scene is shown with cavaliers fighting each other, or in groups. Painted against a dark grey sky, the ground appears to be sand. Figures in the background are painted in monochrome, the foreground cavaliers picked out with yellow costume, some with white horses. They wear wide hats with plumes and breast plates.
Provenance
Acquired with Calke Abbey's contents, with the aid of a grant provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government and transferred in lieu of tax on the estate of Charles Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1917 - 1981) to the National Trust with the house that was given by Henry Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1921- 1991), in 1984
