Caption
The original of this picture, painted in 1512, is now in the Thyssen collection, Madrid. In the original, the paper held in Carondelet’s right hand is inscribed: 'To the honourable and beloved Ferry Carondelet, Archdeacon of Besancon, Imperial Councillor and Commissioner in Rome.' Carondelet was a Habsburg diplomat, advisor to Margaret of Austria and abbot at Montbenoît. In the Calke picture, the signet ring on the little finger of his right hand bears his coat of arms, and his motto 'Know your own good fortune' is inscribed beneath the pediment of the portal behind him. There is also a copy of this picture at another National Trust house, Dunham Massey, in Cheshire.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Ferry Carondolet (1473-1528) and his Secretary, after Sebastiano del Piombo (Venice c.1485 - Rome 1547), 18th century. Ferry Carondolet is seated at the a table on the left, turned to the right, gazing to the right, wearing a close red cap, and a deep purple gown lined with luxurious spotted white fur; he holds some papers in his right hand. The signet ring on the little finger of his right hand bears his coat of arms, and his motto 'Know your own good fortune' is inscribed beneath the pediment of the portal behind him On the table are letters, books, ink and a watch on a figured table cloth. A secretary is seated to the right, looking up at Carondolet and holding a quill on his right hand, in the process of writing on a paper on the table. Behind them on the left is the head of another man, behind the figures is a classical-style portico with Corinthian marble columns, a coffered ceiling and in the background a pediment. On the right of the portico is a landscape with a distant horizon, clouds and sky. The original of 1512, is in the Thyssen collection, Madrid. In the original the paper held in Carondelet right hand is inscribed: 'To the honourable and beloved Ferry Carondelet, Archdeacon of Besancon, Imperial Councillor and Commissioner in Rome..'
