Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Two Figures with Poultry, British (English) School, circa 1700. Two three-quarter-length figures, the man on the right, standing, turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, holds up a dead duck by its neck in his left hand, his right hand is tucked into the white waist-band of his brown tunic. He wears a small black cap. A woman to the left is turned to the left, looking over her left shoulder, and holds a white hen cradled in her arms. She wears a white linen cap and a white kerchief over her shoulders. Dark background.
Provenance
Acquired with Calke Abbey's contents, with the aid of a grant provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government and transferred in lieu of tax on the estate of Charles Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1917 - 1981) to the National Trust with the house that was given by Henry Jenney Harpur-Crewe (1921- 1991), in 1984
