Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Saddled Black Hunter in a Landscape by Clifton Tomson (1775-1831). A saddled black horse in a landscape with a church in the distance. Nottingham, 1804. Clifton Tomson was born in Nottingham where he lived for the rest of his life with his wife Grace Brailsford and their nine children. His father was recorded both as a ‘frame smith’ and a ‘gentleman’. He was a successful animal painter also adept, as seen here, at landscape backgrounds. He travelled extensively in England and many of his pictures feature, Doncaster, Nottingham or York racecourses. He died at the age of 53 and is buried where he was baptised in St Mary’s, Nottingham.
Provenance
Calke Abbey was given to the National Trust by Henry Harpur Crewe (1921-1991) and the contents, including this painting, were acquired with the aid of a grant from the National Heritage Fund, thanks to a special allocation of money from the Government, in 1984
