Summary
Brightly painted figure, clay, India, 19th or early 20th century, representing a female figure, standing and with a baby. Handpainted text around the base identifying the figure's occupation (ayah). One of six similar figures. This figure is one of many such 19th century clay models produced in various cities in India including Lucknow, Krishnagar, Calcutta and Pune. They were made by Indian manufacturers for sale to Europeans, in response to European interest in categorising Indian people and society.
