Summary
Gilt plaster portrait medallion of Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm (1834-1890) in circular turned wooden frame. Portrait of Carlyle in profile, facing left, inscribed 'THOMAS CARLYLE' around perimeter. Signed 'BOEHM' on truncation. Plaster study for the 'Edinburgh Medal', a medal struck to commemorate Carlyle's 80 birthday, see NT 263870.
