Summary
Plaster statuette of Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm (1834-1890), 1874. Carlyle is seated on a hall chair, with his hands crossed in his lap. He wears a shirt, waistcoat and jacket. The statuette is cut off at the knee, unlike the bronze version of the same statuette which includes Carlyle's legs (NT 263801). Inscribed on reverse: 'Thomas Carlyle/modelled from life/ by Boehm 1874/ May'. A metal armature can be seen on the base of model, suggesting that it may have been directly modelled.
