Summary
Oil painting on canvas, portrait of Mary Aitken (1848-95), British (English) School, late 19th century. Mary Aitken came to Cheyne Row to care for her uncle, Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) in 1868, following Jane' Carlyle's death. She married her cousin, Alexander Carlyle (1843-1931), in 1879. Mary and Alexander lived with Thomas until his death in 1881.

Given to the National Trust with Carlyle's House by the Carlyle's House Memorial Trust in 1936
