Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir John George Reeve de la Pole, 8th Bt (1808-1874) by Michele Gordigiani (Florence 1830 – 1909), 1860. The sitter was the son of Sir Willilam Templer Pole and his first wife, Sophia Anne, only daughter of George Templer of Shapwick House, Somerset. He was the grandson of Sir John William and Lady (Anne) de la Pole who built the new Shute House in 1787. Two oxen were roasted for his coming-of-age in 1829. He married firstly Margaretta Barton from Saucethorpe Hall in Lincolnshire, who died in 1842. He married secondly Josephine Catherine Denise Carre in 1843 and spent most of the rest of his life in France.
