Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, William Gibbs (1790-1875) by Antonio Tomasich Y Haro (Almeria 1820 – Madrid 1890). Christie's description: Gold framed ivory miniature by Antonio Tomasich Y Haro of William Gibbs, turned to the right in a black coat. Signed and dated: A. Tomasich 1872. An identifying inscription on the reverse reads: William Gibbs / of Tyntesfield / A. Tomasich / 34. Sotheby's description: Framed oval ivory miniature attributed to Antonio Tomasich Y Haro 1820-1890. Head and shoulders portrait of Willaim Gibbs of Tyntesfield (1790-1875). Signed c.r. A. Tomasich 1872. This work and the two other miniatures by Tomasich are referred to in William Gibbs' diary for 1872. 14th June 1872. Gave Tomasich another and I hope the last sitting. And again 18th June. Tomasich came again and I gave him an 11th sitting of 1~hours but it really is terribly tiresome In the broiling weather and I am heartily sick of it.
