Caption
St Jerome retired to the Syrian desert for many years as a hermit where he suffered many hallucinations so he would beat his breast until the fever passed. He is often seen holding a stone. Here rather than in the wilderness, he kneels amongst antique ruins looking at a small crucifix Although he was never actually made a cardinal he is often portrayed in cardinal' s robes in recognition of an appointment he held under Pope Damascus I, as he is here and behind him is his attribute, the lion, from which, according to fable he pulled a thorn and thereafter the lion became a devoted friend.
