Caption
Until 1833 Decimus Burton's Constitution Arch (1827-1828), which was intended as the northern entrance to Buckingham Palace, was aligned with his Ionic Screen to Hyde Park (1824-1825). The lamps, here shown inside the arch, no longer exist. Jean-Maxime Claude was commonly known under the name of Max Claude.

An old label on the back giving the title as Sheltering from the rain states that the picture was bought from the French Gallery in 1873 for £178.10s.;Christie’s (Charnley), 8th March 1926, lot 68; Christie’s (Wolff), 28th June 1925, lot 152, bought by Flowersheim (?); bequeathed to the National Trust together with Wimpole Hall, all its contents and an estate of 3,000 acres by Elsie Kipling, Mrs Bambridge (1896-1976)
