Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Mrs Agneta Yorke (1740-1820) by George Romney (Dalton-in-Furness 1734 – Kendal 1802), 1779-80. A portrait of a seated lady with her arm resting on an urn. The sitter has formerly been identified as Lady Elizabeth Scot Lindsay, Countess of Hardwicke (1763-1858) the wife of Philip Yorke, the 3rd Earl, although the portrait is now thought to depict his step-mother, Mrs Agneta Yorke (1740-1820). Nine sittings with Mrs Yorke are recorded in Romney's studio diary between 6 February 1779 and 11 November 1780. Her picture was paid for for in two installments. An initial sum of £15 was paid on 25 May 1779 and a second of £13 7s on24 October 1783. The mauve dress was painted over in black in 1880 although this was subsequently removed when Mrs Elsie Bambridge acquired the picture for Wimpole Hall.
