Summary
Oil painting on canvas, View of East Riddlesden Hall, British School, circa 1830/40. Hall with landscape and cattle in foreground, the River Aire visible to the left. This is the earliest known image of the hall, showing both completed wings and a walled garden to the west. Dwarfing the other cattle in the foreground is the famous 'Airedale Heifer' which was fattened at East Riddlesden in the late 1820s/early 1830s. The painting is naive in style, but appears reasonably accurate other than leaving out of the two great barns to the east and the addition of non-existent mountains across the valley.
