Summary
Mezzotint of Elizabeth Gunning, Duchess of Hamilton and Duchess of Argyll (1734 – 1790) printed and published by John Finlayson (circa 1730-1774) in circa 1770, after the portrait painted by Katherine Read. The modern black frame with gilt sightedge and modern cream mount, houses the engraving of Elizabeth within an oval trompe l'oeil from shoulder height, wearing a close-fitting frilly cap. Elizabeth Gunning (1734 – 1790) was the daughter of Colonel John Gunning and Hon. Bridget Bourke; with three siblings Maria Coventry, Countess of Coventry (1732-1760), John Gunning (died 1797) and Charlotte Gunning (died 1775). Elizabeth married James Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton (1724-1758) in 1952 until his death in 1958, marrying Field Marshal John Campbell, 5th Duke of Argyll (1723-1806) a year later; Elizabeth had eight children throughout the two marriages.
