Summary
Painting. An oil painting on canvas, The Judgement of Solomon (after Rubens), English School, after Sir Peter Paul Rubens (Siegen 1577 - Antwerp 1640), c1674. Solomon is seated on a raised throne on the left and is surrounded by a group of elders. In front are two women, one kneeling, her back facing. Between the women is an executioner, poised with a raised sword, dangling a baby upside down by the foot, from his left hand. Another version of this composition, after a lost original is in the Statens Museum, Copenhagen. This copy is probably from an engraving after Boetius a Bolswert.
