Summary
Painting. An oil painting on canvas, The Angel of the Lord preventing Abraham from sacrificing his Son Isaac, English, after Flemish School (?Quellinus), c1674. This biblical scene, as told in Genesis 22: 11-12, shows a seated Isaac, almost naked and blindfolded, and standing over him, Abraham, a long knife in his left hand. Above is a winged angel, restraining Abraham. To the right a ram, sent from God, approaches from the thicket. The figure of Isaac blindfold is similar to Cigoli's rendering of the same subject of 1607, in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence - itself influenced by Michelangelo's nudes. The figure of Isaac is also similar to a grisaille by Maerten Geeraerts (1707 - 1791) in the Brussels museum.
