Full description
This is a portrait of Ralph’s oldest sister Blanche Mary Stukeley Dutton (1894-76), painted when she was around 3 to 4 years old. It was probably commissioned by their mother Blanche Eleanor Cave (1865-1946) from her distant relative the artist Emily "Milly" Maria Eardley Childers (1866 – 1922), best known for her portrait of the The Terrace, 1909, depicting the Members' Terrace outside the Palace of Westminster (Parliamentary Art Collection). Childers began exhibiting her work from 1890 and travelled extensively throughout England and France. Many of her works depict scenes from her travels, such as street views, local inhabitants and architectural interiors, but she also painted a number of commissioned portraits. Another childhood portrait by Childers, painted around the same time, is that of Lord Dudley Gladstone Gordon (1883-1972), at Haddo House (National Trust for Scotland).
