Summary
[Destroyed in the fire of 2015] Oil painting on canvas, Lieutenant-General Richard Onslow (d.1760) by Hans Hysing (Stockholm 1678 – London 1753), inscribed with the name of the sitter and 174 (?) A three-quarter-length portrait, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, in long powdered wig, wearing a breastplate over a blue coat with gold frogging, holding his baton in his right hand and his left hand on his hip just above his sword hilt. Rocky background to the right, distant landscape to the left with battle secne and cloudy blue sky.
Provenance
Purchased by the Ministry of Public Building and Works in 1963 from the 6th Earl, Transferred to the National Trust in 1977.
