John FitzWilliam, 8th Viscount FitzWilliam (1752–1830), seated to the left, plays chess with The Hon. Edward Onslow (1758-1829), sat opposite him. They are watched by the standing figures of George Augustus Herbert, 11th Earl of Pembroke (1759-1827) and an unidentified Indian servant. A dog sits at the feet of each of the seated men.

Purchased by the Ministry of Public Building and Works in 1963 from the 6th Earl, transferred to the National Trust in 1977
