Summary
A gold coin pendant with hanging lug. Possibly a Solidus of Honorius AD 383-423. Obverse shows a head in profile facing right with inscription 'D N HONORI ... VESP AUG ...'. Reverse shows a standing helmeted figure holding a trident with one foot on a prostrate figure, with inscription '... ... VICTOR..' Label 'Appears identical to Solidus of Honorius AD 393-423 Roman Seaby 4144, but is it a coin or a copy'.
Provenance
Gold solidus of Honorius (r. 393-423), minted in Milan by an unknown creator, and later converted into a coin-pendant, no earlier than the late 6th century. Casual loss, or possibly deposited as part of a cremation event, no later than early 7th century. Discovered in Garden Field at Sutton Hoo during a field walking and metal-detecting survey after the initial find of the Bromeswell bucket fragments in late 1986. Lent to the National Trust by the Annie Tranmer Charitable Trust and acquired by Gift to the National Trust in 2026.
