Summary
Oil painting on panel, Supposed to be Elinor Pope, Mrs Walter Jones (d.1638), British (English) School, Inscribed: AETATIS. SUAE. R ANO. . DNI. R/.1605. A three-quarter-length portrait of possibly the daughter of Henry Pope, the court jeweller, standing, facing viewer, wearing a black dress with embroidery at the neck and cuffs; white ruff; holds a (?) fan in her right han; rings on the thumb and little finger of the right hand. Long chain necklaces. The sitter is shown a resolutley independent and welathy widow, holding the silver shaft of a once black-featheeerd dfan and fingering a gold chain, but since Elinor's husband did not die until 1632 this may not be her.
