Caption
This picture was copied after a gouache by Busiri, from a series at Felbrigg. Windham bought numerous works from Busiri in Rome, but evidently failed to think of an overmantel, and must have been reluctant to cut into either of the upright pictures to make one. Instead, he must have asked Nickolls, who is almost exclusively known for his London views, to make this enlarged copy of Busiri’s gouache of what was perhaps the most celebrated and often-painted view in Italy.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Grand Cascade at Tivoli (after Giovanni Battista Busiri) by Joseph Nickolls (1713-1755), circa 1751. A valley with a river running through with trees either side and buildings on the cliff top to the right, man and dog in foreground and two bathers behind. Windham went to a London view-painter for this enlarged copy of FEL/P/20, what was perhaps the most celebrated and often-painted view in Italy.
