Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Bay of Naples, with the Chiaia, seen from Posillipo, by Tommaso Ruiz (fl.1740), signed: Tomaso Ruiz F (concealed by frame). From a set of five Neapolitan views probably bought by Sir Matthew Fetherstonhaugh on his Grand Tour. Nothing is known of Ruiz, whose name suggests a Spanish origin, except that he had a brother Juan who also painted similar views of Naples for the Grand tourist market. (NT/UPP/P/141b,c,d are others in set. One was destroyed in 1989). A very similar rendering is in the collection at Compton Verney, Warwickshire.
