Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Italian Landscape with Figures by a Waterfall and a Man on Horseback by Francesco Zuccarelli, RA (Pitigliano 1702 - Florence 1788). A river cascades down a hill at the right and at a small waterfall in the foreground a group of resting figures are passed by a horseman and by a woman and child driving cattle. A campanile on the hill at the right. Probably acquired by Sir Matthew Fetherstonhaugh, perhaps in Venice through Consul Joseph Smith, who found a ready market for such gently classicising landscapes among British visitors. This success encouraged Zuccarelli to settle in England (1752 - 62, c.1764/6 - 1771), where he became a founder member of the Royal Academy.
