Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Italian Landscape by Francesco Zuccarelli, RA (Pitigliano 1702 - Florence 1788). In the foreground washerwomen are occupied in hanging out clothes or are resting; at the left is a group of buildings with a round tower. Probably acquired by Sir Matthew Fetherstonhaugh, perhaps in Venice through Consul Joseph Smith, who found a ready market for such gently classicising landscapes among British visitors. This success encouraged Zuccarelli to settle in England (1752 - 62 and around 1764/6 - 1771), where he became a founder member of the Royal Academy.
Provenance
Probably acquired by Sir Matthew Fetherstonhaugh, perhaps in Venice through Consul Joseph Smith, who found a ready market for such gently classicising landscapes among British visitors; early 19th century hanging-plans, in the little Drawing Room, one of : '3.4 Landscapes Zucarelli' [one above the other, to the roight of the chimney piece]; H. R. Bolton's bill for cleaining, 28th September 1849: '27 Landscape with Washing Women by Zuccarelli.';
