Summary
Oil painting on canvas, View of South Harting, Sussex by Joseph Francis Gilbert (1792-1835), signed and dated 21 July 1834. Inscribed in black on back of canvas: View of the Village of Harting/Sussex/Painted by Jospeh Francis Gilbert./ July 21 1834. The village of South Harting, in the valley below Uppark, formed part of the estate. It is seen at the bottom of the hill, up which a team of horses is drawing a wagon load of logs. On the edge of the village are the pumping house and Engine Pond, from which water was pumped up to Uppark.
Provenance
accepted in lieu of tax on the death of Admiral the Hon. Sir Herbert Meade-Fetherstonhaugh (1875-1964) in 1965 and transferred to the National Trust by HM Treasury in September 1985
