Summary
Child's 'fancy straw' summer bonnet, the crown and brim are in one, the brim pointed by the ears. Brim wired and bound in cream silk, the straw worked with horsehair in a decorative pattern. Traces of gauze head lining remain, protecting the wearers head from the straw (see p.156, Cunnington). Fragment of makers stamp on head lining. Note; Modern trimmings have been removed and a layer of polyester crepeline tacked in place to preserve the head lining (D.Dean, 1985). The bonnet would probably have had a bavolet (curtain) and would have been trimmed with ribbons and flowers. 1850 (circa)
