Summary
Polonaise dress - Pink striped silk drawstring polonaise. Bodice and sleeves linen lined, bodice lining centre back suggesting alteration. Bodice back en fourreau. Elbow length sleeves, muslin triple flounced engageants (stitched in back to front). Robe edged with gathered self material with scallop and van dyke shaped pinked edges. Edge to edge pointed front bodice has four hook and loop closings and a double fronted panel which folds back to side seams to form revers. Skirt is short, hem rounded centre front. Four tapes at centre back indicate earlier version of a polonaise, since no function at present. N. Rothstein dates fabric 1770-1773. 1775 (circa)
