Summary
Great coat - A coat made of interwoven saxe-blue and cream tabby wool, the lining has disappeared. Single breasted, fastening either way; fall collar with 3 buttonholes on left side and remains of buttons on right (self covered). The waist seam is not extended all the way across the centre-back, the back is cut into 4 pieces, the 2 centre pieces extending to hem of coat. Overlapping centre-back vent; false pocket flaps in vents; sleeves cut in 2 pieces and set in with gathers at shoulder; round cuff slits and fastened with 3 buttons. All edges except hemline edged with cream silk ribbon. There is a paper label attached to inside left front in Charles Wade's handwriting 'Coat Landjuinais Girordin 1793'; possibly he means 'Girondin', the opponents of the Jacobeans during the French Revolution. There have also been alterations which consist of 2 strips set in down right back. They appear to have been put in before the collar was attached to the garment-possibly have been for a hunchback!.
