Summary
Top hat made from glossy straw woven around radiating spokes of ?split cane. It is lined with ivory silk with a printed label inside 'Bastide Chapelier, Rue de Avoire N 51 a Paris'. It has a leather headband with a linen drawstring at the back. The brim edge is bound with narrow cream silk ribbon with a cream silk ribbon band with a bow. The box is covered with green paper and has narrow leather straps. The lid is missing. Made in paris. A sepia tone photograph was found in the hatbox of Mr Baillie by Disden and Cie, 8 Boulevard des Italiens, Paris. It is possibly that the hat belonged to Mr Baillie although it is not the one in the photograph. (male) Wade Catalogue number B.5 "Top Hat, of very cleverly woven straw, silk binding and ribbon.
