Summary
Military hat (army) - Made from black beaver. The lining is missing. It is cocked with a straight back flap and curved front flap. The brims are bound with narrow black silk braid. There are two pieces of black silk ribbon either side of the front flap. There is a black silk cockade and a brass crested buttons with 3 cannons and 3 cannonballs 'Honi Soit qui mal pense'. The loop is missing and tassels from the points. From the Army Ordnance Dept - Dress Regulations for 1846 states that cocked hats should be of the same dimensions as this example.
