Summary
Bonnet - Made from straw plait 2cm wide alternating with fancy straw braid with a scalloped edge. There is a maroon silk bavolet. The crown is lined with cream silk with cotton wadding underneath. The brim is lined with pink taffeta ruched over 3 rows of cane. The bavolet is lined with cream silk. It is handstitched through overlapped plait and braid. The back edge is reinforced and the edge of the brim is caned. It is trimmed with 3 strips of maroon velvet with 1 strip with punched scalloped edge and holes. There are 2 wide punched velvet pieces hanging at the right hand side. There is a garland of pink and maroon pressed velvet petals and silk tulle on wire frame pinned inside the brim. It fastens with maroon silk ribbons with yellow and black scalloped edging. There are narrow silk ribbon ties inside the brim. The maroon ribbon ties are woven with cream threads on the border and black and cream scalloped thread edge. Cf. Nancy Bradfield 'Costume in Detail' pg.180 (female)
