Summary
Dress - Woman's silk dress dating from c1820. Fabric - Fine cream knitted silk fabric printed with stripes of trailing stems and flowers in black, green, blue and pink. Lining - Fully lined white glazed cotton. Cut - Slightly raised waistline. Wide, square neckline. Sleeveless bodice, back and front. Pleated into neck and waist. Cap sleeves with point falling at back. Set-in waistband. Centre-back opening extends into skirt. Straight cut skirt pleated all round waist. Fabric and lining worked as one. Trimmings - Folded Brunswick green satin - 2 rows round neck, 6 rows at knee level. Dark green silk braid binding edge of sleeves. Fastenings - Lining tape drawstring inside front neck and at back opening. 2 large pairs of brass hooks and eyes on waistband. Comment - Belonged to Maria Edgworth (1767-1849), educational reformer.
