Summary
Dress - A woman's silk taffeta dress dating from 1850-55. Fabric - Black silk taffeta. Lining - Bodice and sleeves lined brown cotton twill. Skirt lined coarse brown muslin. Dark green hem braid. Cut - High round neck. Front opening stepped at waist. Dropped shoulders. The bodice front is full, mounted onto a fitted lining. The fullness is draped from the shoulder seam, placed well back, in towards centre-front where it is held in place with gauging. The lining has 2 boned bust darts, the side seams and the right hand front edge are also boned. The back is cut in 3 pieces with curved seams running from armhole to waist. The long sleeves are full, pleated at the head, beneath epauletted and then taper to the wrist. Piped seams. Trimmings - Epaulettes, wrists and flounces edged in black velvet. Fastenings - 16 steel hooks and worked eyelets centre-front. Large metal hook and eye at waist (hook missing). Cross Reference - Nancy Bradfield 'Costume in Detail' p209, H. (female)
